I began painting about 20 years ago with a 4-week beginning tole painting class in a local tole shop here in Southern California. Eventually, after many years taking classes and learning from the best of the best, I started designing my own pieces. Currently, I work for the U.S. Navy in a cost estimating role. Until retirement at the end of this year, I paint part time with a full-time attitude in my home studio in Temecula, CA.
One of my favorite methods to incorporate into my designs is a touch of Impressionism working with transparent color and a lot of paint, particularly when painting florals like geranium and hydrangea. For these flowers, I design in shapes, layering transparent color, finishing off with opaque values. I have strayed away from patterning these flowers, instead using live models for shape, size, lights and darks.
At Back to the Beach, I have incorporated these principles into my Geranium design which I created with DecoArt’s Premium Acrylics. This class is a “two-for” so to speak. You’ll learn something new and exciting in building a flower without a pattern, and without the stress of perfect stroke work. And you will create your masterpiece using DecoArt’s Premium Acrylics. If you haven’t tried them already, you are in for a treat. I will show you how to use their vibrant colors along with a few of the mediums that have been especially formulated to make these paints so yummy to use.
I am extra excited about this year’s SDP Conference because it is my first-time teaching at the SDP Conference. I don’t know of any better place to learn, meet new friends, and connect with people with the same interests and passion as I have. The fact that this Conference is on the beach is just the cherry on our sundae! I hope to paint with you in Daytona!
