Story submitted by Gloria Falk, President, and Luz Rooney, Member of the Gateway Decorative Artists, St. Louis, MO
Our Gateway Decorative Artists (GDA) Chapter of St. Louis, MO participated in United Nations Day, which is celebrated around the world each year on October 24.
This year’s theme was “Global Goals, Local Leaders,” so Luz Rooney, who is a member of GDA, and also serves as a member of the United Nations Association (UNA-USA) and a board member of the local UNA-USA chapter, organized an event focused on local non-profits that are addressing issues related to the UN’s Sustainable Developments Goals (SGD’s).
Just Moms STL was one of the featured speakers. They addressed the environmental and heal issues of West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, MO. Part of the action plan was to create an environmental postcard related to this landfill. Therefore, Luz saw an opportunity for GDA to participate.
Gloria Falk, President of GDA, and Mary Jo Kumer, another member, demonstrated colored pencil and displayed samples of their work. They also showcased memory boxes that they had painted and handed out brochures about their chapter and the memory box program. This event gave the Gateway chapter an opportunity to get involved in a local cause with global impact, while introducing the art of colored pencil to residents at the same time.
